The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) secured a majority in the Odisha Assembly by winning 78 seats in the 147-member House, as announced by the Election Commission of India after counting concluded late night on June 4.
The Biju Janta Dal (BJD), in power in Odisha since 2000, wins 51 Assembly seats, while the Congress secures 14 seats.
Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik loses power after 24 years. He was trailing in Kantabanji to the BJP’s candidate Laxman Bag by 16,344 votes. Patnaik chose Kantabanji as his second seat, apart from his traditional base in Hinjili, from where he won by a margin of 4,782 votes.
In 2019, the 16th assembly elections in Odisha chose 147 members. Securing 112 seats, the BJD formed the state government with Naveen Patnaik as Chief Minister, securing the fifth consecutive term in office.
This was followed by the BJP at 23 and Congress at nine. The remaining were won by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and an independent candidate.
The Odisha assembly elections were conducted concurrently with the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The voting for the 17th Odisha Legislative Assembly was held in four phases on May 13, May 20, May 25 and June 1.
In the first phase, 28 constituencies went to the polls on May 13. The second and third phases witnessed voting in 35 and 42 constituencies respectively. In the fourth and final phase elections were held in 42 seats.
